Part 1 of 2 - Letter from Caine Pelzer describing SCI-Fayette. Mr. Pelzer is one of 16 men at SCI-Fayette on hunger strike for over a month, as of the day this letter is posted. They are joined by members of the Human Rights Coalition, who are also on hunger strike and have put forth four core demands: 1. Abolish the Restricted Release List, 2. Investigate patterns of abuse in DOC and fire abusive guards at SCI Fayette, 3. End Long-Term Solitary Confinement, 4. Close SCI Fayette due to contaminated air and water, which are causing extreme health issues among prisoners . Join the Human Rights Coalition at our Rally outside of Governor Wolf's office in Philadelphia! This Friday, we're standing up in support of the hunger strikers at SCI Fayette (#Hungry4Justice), and in prisons across the country for #BlackAugust A little backstory: On July 4th, 2019 16 prisoners began a hunger strike to peacefully protest their physical and psychological abuse in solitary confinement and their systematic denial of basic goods such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, mail, yard time and showers. The hunger strikers issued Demands: 1. Abolish the Restricted Release List 2. Investigate patterns of abuse in DOC and fire abusive guards at SCI Fayette 3. End Long-Term Solitary Confinement - Pass HB497 4. Close SCI Fayette due to toxic waste and prison health issues
